Field Education for Professional Practice

BSSW Field Practice places students in real-world environments to provide them with an opportunity to apply their social work knowledge, values, and practice skills through hands-on experience. BSSW students are placed in a wide-variety of settings including hospitals, mental health centers, non-profits, homeless shelters, courts, and schools - all under the direct supervision of experienced social workers.

Global Studies

BSSW students have opportunities to complete coursework and a field place-ment outside of the United States by participating in our International Initiatives Program, promoting exchange studies across the world from Scotland to South Africa and from Australia to Ghana.

Student Organizations and Community

All social work students are eligible for membership in the Bachelor's Social Work Organization (BSWO). At weekly BSWO meetings, students discuss academic issues, organize professional development activities and community projects, identify fund raising opportunities, and plan social events. BSWO members also participate in University-wide committees and BSSW Program committees.

Specialized Programs

The TN Department of Children's Services Title IV-E Tuition Assistance Program provides financial support for selected students who commit to working with the TN Department of Children Services for 2 years following graduation. The School Social Work Licensure Program is available to currently enrolled BSSW students to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice in school settings throughout the state.
