Personal Statement—Teaching Philosophy:
Research and scholarship
The goal of my current research and scholarship is to produce evidence-based knowledge and practice for work with health care consumers in the context of the major, emerging physical illnesses and health care problems of the 21st century. My research and scholarship is contextualized by the convergence of diminishing health care resources, managed care, and the expanding numbers, and diversification of consumers coping with multiple, chronic illnesses.
Teaching philosophy and pedagogy
My pedagogical philosophy, approach to teaching, and research are closely linked. My overall goal in teaching is to foster students' acquisition of the empirically based knowledge and skills necessary for ethical, efficacious, and culturally affirming professional social work practice in the 21st century in the socio-economic context of increasingly limited resources, critical thinking, and ethical practice. Philosophically I approach teaching as a partnership with students helping them to think globally and nationally, while acting locally with consumer clients/client systems, communities, and organizations.
Research Interests:
Dr. Egan's research areas include social work in health care settings, particularly in community-based settings serving under-served populations, such as the uninsured, marginalized women and their children, and older adults, and the influence of managed care on health care social workers, clients, and practice.
