Matthew Theriot is Interim Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation. As vice provost, he oversees and facilitates processes related to faculty recruitment, retention, evaluation, promotion, tenure, and professional development for the campus. He also leads campus efforts on faculty-related aspects of the University’s strategic plan. In his role as associate provost, he leads the implementation of the campus’ Experience Learning initiative and has oversight for the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center and the Office of Service-Learning.

Since arriving at the University of Tennessee in 2003, he served as director of the College of Social Work’s undergraduate program from 2006 to 2013 and then served for three years as director of the college’s PhD program. He has chaired the university's Undergraduate Council and Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and recently led the development of the campus’ Quality Enhancement Plan, Experience Learning. He also served on the board of directors for the Council on Social Work Education and currently serves on CSWE’s Commission on Educational Policy. Prior to his career in higher education, he worked as a school social worker, child welfare worker, and mobile crisis counselor. His research focuses primarily on juvenile violence and delinquency, with a special interest in school violence and school security. His secondary areas of research are mental health service utilization and social work education.

Dr. Theriot's scholarly focus is on juvenile violence and delinquency. His secondary interests are social work education and mental health service utilization.
