Examples of Field Placement Options Available to International Students
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Social Work adheres to the Student Exchange Visa guidelines ( J1). The Director of International Initiatives works closely with exchange students to identify placements that interest the student while ensuring visa policies are followed. Some identified placements are:
Bridge Refugee Services, Inc. Services include guiding refugee's in the first six months of their new lives in the United States. Bridge Refugee Services provides safe living conditions, links to medical services, enrollment in school for children and assistance with employment for adults.
Community Action Committee The CAC Office on Aging provides a wide variety of programs and services that improve the quality of life for older people, including programs that help them remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Programs of the Office on Aging offer a broad spectrum of health and nutrition-related services, consumer and home-safety related services, in-home services, and educational, recreational, and volunteer opportunities for seniors.
The Salvation Army This Non-Profit Homeless shelter provides transitional housing for individuals including women and children. Students will assist with shelter management as well as provide community resources to clients addressing specific needs.
Volunteer Ministry Center This organization is dedicated to the prevention of homelessness, serves individuals who may be at risk of losing their home, procures bus tickets or utility assistance, and provides vouchers instead of cash. "Housing First" approach to ending homelessness, client commits to a case management relationship, assistance to clients in obtaining permanent supportive housing and relationship supports them while in housing to ensure success.
