What is the Online MSSW Program?The Online MSSW Advanced Standing Program, Online MSSW Full-Time Program, and the Online MSSW Extended Study Program are designed for people who are unable to come to campus for class, due to their geographic location or schedule.
How long will it take to complete the Online MSSW program?
The Online MSSW Advanced Standing Program can be completed in one to two years. The Online MSSW Full-time Program is completed in two years and the Online MSSW Extended Study Program may be completed in three or four years.
Will all of my classes be online?
Yes. All classes will be offered through an online format. Students will also complete an internship at an approved agency. Student internships will be arranged within a reasonable driving distance from the student's location. Click here to read more about field practice.
Is financial aid available for the Online MSSW?

I do not have a BSW/BSSW, but I have a degree in a related field and years of work experience, do I qualify for the Online MSSW Advanced Standing Program?
No. You must have a degree from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to be considered for the Online MSSW Advanced Standing Program.
I have a BSW/BSSW, but I graduated from school ten years ago, do I qualify for the Online MSSW Advanced Standing Program?
No. In order to qualify for the Online MSSW Advanced Standing Program, you must have graduated with a BSW/BSSW from a Council on Social Work Education accredited college of social work no more than five years ago.
I live out of state; can I attend the Online MSSW program?
Yes. Students that reside outside of the state of Tennessee as well as outside of the United States may apply.
I am an out-of-state resident. When is the deadline to apply to the Online MSSW program?
The deadline to apply is February 1st. No applications will be accepted from out-of-state students after February 1st.
Can I take extra classes so that I can graduate earlier?
No. Students must move along with their cohort and follow the stated program of study.
I have a Masters degree in a related field; will some of my credits transfer as electives?
No. Graduate credits that have been used for the completion of another master’s program cannot be applied toward the MSSW degree. If you have completed a graduate level course but have not used this course for another mater’s degree program, you may be able to use the course as an elective for the MSSW program if you received a grade of a “B” or higher in that course. Acceptance of such a course as an elective is decided on a case-by-case basis.
Since this program is online, do I still need to complete field practice?
Yes. Students will be expected to complete a field practicum. Generalist field students will accumulate 128 hours in the fall semester and 224 in the spring semester for a total of 352 hours with the assigned agency. Concentration students will accumulate 336 hours per semester, for a total of 672 in the concentration year. Concentration students may spread these hours out over three semesters.
