Bachelor of Science in Social Work (B.S.S.W.)

The Bachelor of Science in Social Work (B.S.S.W.) program at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work exists to fulfill a need for disciplined, highly educated and trained generalist social workers to help people improve their social functioning in a technologically complex, culturally diverse, and rapidly changing world without borders.

Master of Science in Social Work (M.S.S.W.)

Educating masters’ level social work students for competent and accountable practice with and on behalf of at-risk populations in the 21st century requires that the College of Social Work' s Master of Science in Social Work (M.S.S.W.) curriculum provide students with cutting-edge knowledge across client systems that are situated within a complex, multilayered, multicultural, ever-changing global community.

In June 2008, the College of Social Work launched a Distance Education M.S.S.W. for students who are unable to come to campus for classes due to their physical location. (The Distance Education program is designed specifically for students who live outside of a 25-mile radius of the Knoxville and Nashville campuses.) The College is offering two distance education (DE) programs of study: the DE Extended Study program and the DE Advanced Standing program.

Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work (Ph.D.)

The University of Tennessee College of Social Work offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree with a major in social work. The purpose of social work education at the doctoral level is to foster an understanding and appreciation of the scientific method, to improve and extend the knowledge base of social work, and to develop competent leadership in social work education, research, and practice.

The School Social Work Licensure Program

The State of Tennessee School Social Work Licensure Program at the Universtiy of Tennessee College of Social Work is available to currently enrolled Bachelor's level and Master's level students as well as persons who currently hold either a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited program. This licensure program in school social work equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice in school settings throughout the state of Tennessee.

The Post-Baccalaureate/Graduate Gerontology Certificate Program

Gerontology has an enduring academic value. Everyone is aging, and the professionals in this field should be trained at quality institutions. The Gerontology Certificate Program prepares students to be effective citizens in our current society, and touches upon many core disciplines within the scope of this field.
