Installing McAfee VirusScanAll faculty, staff, and students may download McAfee VirusScan for free from http://antivirus.utk.edu. When prompted to save the file, save it to your desktop for ease of finding it later. As part of the download process, you will be required to log in using your UT NetID and NetID password. (For information on finding your NetID and NetID password, go to http://accounts.utk.edu/uact/your-netid.html.) After the download is complete, un-install your non-UT provided antivirus software (if you're using one.) You should not install McAfee without first removing other antivirus products. NOTE: If you are upgrading from a previous version of McAfee that you received from the University, do NOT uninstall the old version - simply install the new version over the old. To un-install:
Once any non-UT version of antivirus software has been removed: 1. Double click on the
file you downloaded to begin the installation:
2. The installation will start:
3. If ZoneAlarm is installed on your computer, it will prompt you a several points during the installtion to ask if various components of McAfee VirusScan are allowed to either access the network, acces the trusted zone, access the Internet, or to act as a server. These components will have names
such as such as "Framework Service", "McAfee Lightweight Installer", "NAI Product Manager", and "On-Access Scanner Service". Any time you are prompted about one of those programs mentioned in the previous sentence, check the box that says "Remember this..." and then click the "Allow" button (or depending on your version of ZoneAlarm, the "Yes" button). Clicing the "Remember this..." box will prevent ZoneAlarm from asking you these questions each time components of McAfee run. Below are some examples of what those ZoneAlarm prompts will look like:
5. You will then be prompted to restart
your computer. It is important that you do restart so that McAfee can be loaded into memory and can begin protecting your computer.
6. Once the computer has restarted, it is IMPORTANT that you update the
virus definition files so that McAfee may properly protect your system. Instructions for updating the definition files
can be found here. |
