Securing Your Computer:
Peforming a scan with McAfee VirusScan (Windows 2000/XP)

Performing a scan on your computer

McAfee is configured to automatically perform a system scan for viruses on a periodic basis. At any time you wish (or if you are instructed to do so by your system administrator), you may perform a system scan.

1. Right click on the icon that looks like a shield with the letter "V" on it.
taskbar

2. Click "On-Demand Scan..."

3. Click the "Start" button.

4. If ZoneAlarm is installed on your computer, the first time you run the scan, ZoneAlarm will prompt you asking if On-Demand Scanner is allowed to access the local network and/or the Internet. In each case, click the box beside the sentence "Remember this answer the next time I use this program." and then click "Allow" (or depending on the version of ZoneAlarm, "Yes").

5. The scan for viruses will begin, and in the window, you'll see the current file being scanned as well as the total number of files scanned.

5. If a virus is found, McAfee will notify you of the infected file's name, where is was located, and it's status (cleaned, quarantined, deleted, etc.) will be listed. If no viruses are found, when the scan is complete, you'll see "No infected items were found" at the bottom of the window. Click the "Close" button to close the scan window, and click the "X" in the top corner of the On-Demand Scan Properties window.
