Securing Your Computer:
Updating McAfee VirusScan definition files (Windows 2000/XP )

Updating the virus definition files

The virus definition files will automatically be downloaded by ViruScan on a periodic basis. After you install VirusScan, you should force it to update immediately to get your machine up to date.

1. Right click on the icon that looks like a shield with the letter "V" on it.
taskbar

2. Click on "Update Now..."

3. The program starts the update process. If ZoneAlarm is installed on your computer, it will prompt you to ask if the update program is allowed to access the local network and/or the Internet. In each case, click the box beside the sentence "Remember this answer the next time I use this program." and then click "Allow" (or depending on the version of ZoneAlarm, "Yes"). When the update is complete, the greyed-out "Cancel" button at the bottom will become a "Close" button. Click "Close" to close the window.

4. At the conclusion of the update, you may be prompted to restart your computer:

You should click "Yes" and restart your computer before going any further.

5. If you are updating immediately after installig McAfee, repeat steps 1-3 a second time. Sometimes not everything is updated the very first time, and running a second time ensures that you've got the latest definitions and patches.

6. Under normal operation, if the update fails, repeat steps 1-3 a second time.
