Course of Study for Post-Bac/Graduate Certificate in Gerontology

The post-bac/graduate certificate in gerontology consists of 19+ credit hours as follows:

Requirements:

1. Seven (7) hours covering the focus areas of the interdisciplinary field of gerontology. One course must be taken from each of the 3 focus areas:

  1. Biopscyhsocial
    • SW 572 - Evidence Based Practice with Older Adults (3 credit hours)

  2. Social
    • SW 566 - Social & Cultural Aspects of Aging (2 credit hours)

  3. Behavioral
    • SW 555 - Psychological Development & Mental Health in Later Life (2 credit hours)

Other courses as approved by the coordinator of the certificate program (representative for the Gerontology Colloquy).

2. Six (6) hours of internship or practicum.

3. Six (6) or more hours of electives from the following:

  • H 406 - Death, Dying, and Bereavement (3 credit hours). This course is cross-listed as both an undergraduate and graduate course. Those seeking the Gerontology Certificate must register for the graduate section of this course.
  • NUR 400 - Aging and Society (3 credit hours)
  • SW 540 – International Social Welfare & Sustainability (2 credit hours)
  • SW 530 - Social Work in Community-based Health Care (2 credit hours)
  • SW530 - Clinical Social Work Practice in Hospital and Health Settings (2 credit hours)
  • SW513 - Lifespan and Neurophysiologic Development (4 credit hours)
  • SW519/549/563 - Research (3 credit hours)**

**Students interested in using a research course as a gerontology elective should consult with their gerontology advisor prior to taking the desired course.

Other courses as approved by the coordinator of the certificate program..

During the last semester for the completion of the Gerontology Certificate Program requirements (if graduating, while filing Candidacy forms),submit the Completion of Certificate Program Form per the rules identified by the Graduate School.
