Gerontology Programs at the University of Tennesseee
At the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Gerontology has several program opportunities for study.
- Undergraduate Minor in Gerontology (12 credit hours)
- Graduate Minor in Gerontology (12 credit hours)
- Post-Baccalaureate/Graduate Certificate in Gerontology (19+ credit hours)
Three colleges at the University of Tennessee have vested interest in Gerontology: the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, the College of Nursing, and the College of Social Work. The College of Nursing coordinates the Undergraduate and Graduate Minors in Gerontology (please click the link to their web site above for more detailed information) and the College of Social Work coordinates the Post-Baccalaureate/Graduate Certificate in Gerontology.
The Graduate Gerontology Certificate represents an organized program of study in gerontology on the graduate level for students already enrolled in degree-specific graduate programs or for students who have their bachelor's degree but whish to receive graduate level training in gerontology. The gerontology program involves 19+ credit hours which can be taken simultaneously with many graduate degree programs. Completion of the gerontology certificate enables students to: 1) integrate aging-related knowledge and skills into their own disciplinary field; 2) bring specific gerontological training to the provision of services for an older target population; and 3) demonstrate to employers that they have received formal gerontological training.
Gerontology has an enduring academic value. Everyone is aging, and the professionals in this field should be trained at quality institutions. Our programs prepare students to be effective citizens in our current society, and they touch upon many core disciplines within the scope of this field.
