Admissions Information:

Admissions and Records Office

The Admissions and Records Office for the college is located in Knoxville in Henson Hall. Applications for all three campuses are processed through this office. Applicants indicate the campus in which they are interested on the application form. An applicant may contact this office with questions about the program, the application process, or the status of his or her application (865/974-6697 or via e-mail at jenscag@utk.edu).

Admission Requirements

Admission to the M.S.S.W. program is based on the following requirements:

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Preparation in the social sciences (at least three-fourths of the undergraduate work should be in the social sciences, humanities, physical sciences, and other liberal arts subjects).
  3. A liberal arts perspective with course work from at least four of these five areas:
    a. economics or mathematics
    b. government, political science, or history
    c. sociology or anthropology
    d. psychology
    e. philosophy, literature, or the arts
  4. A cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale for the full-time and extended study programs and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for the advanced standing program.
  5. Personal qualifications acceptable for entrance into the professional practice of social work.
  6. Current scores from the general section of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination).

Preference is given to applicants with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or above in their undergraduate work and with substantial preparation in the social sciences.

Application Process

  1. Acquire application materials from our admissions office or our web site.
  2. Submit the following items directly to Graduate Admissions Office: Graduate School application, $35.00 application fee, official transcripts of all previous academic work, and GRE general test scores. International applicants also submit TOEFL scores, a completed International Form, and a completed Financial Statement.

  3. Submit the following items directly to the College of Social Work Admissions Office: Social Work application, professional statement, and three Social Work reference evaluation forms.

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted after September 1 each year for the following academic year. The priority deadline for receipt of the departmental application is March 1.
