Message from the Chair of the Doctor of Philosophy Program

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your inquiry about the Doctoral Program in Social Work at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work.

The objective of our program is to produce state of the art social work researchers who will contribute to the development of social work knowledge. We offer both substantive courses and advanced training in research methods to enable students to conduct empirical research in their areas of interest.

The Doctoral Program includes required courses such as research methods, statistics, and social work history. It includes electives of the student's choice from a range of course offerings in related social science disciplines. Also included is the completion of a doctoral dissertation based upon independent, empirical research.

Special research opportunities are available in the University of Tennessee Children's Mental Health Services Research Center. The Center is one of four in the research training for faculty and doctoral students.

Graduate assistant ships are offered on the basis of interest and merit to qualified applicants who are admitted to the Ph.D. Program. We have forwarded your name to our financial aid office, and they will send you information on any other available sources of financial aid.

Please send your writing sample, vita, employment history, and personal statement on disk or by email to jbaile14@utk.edu. Applications are accepted after September 1 each year for the following academic year. The deadline for receipt of the departmental application is March 1. Additionally, please note the GRE scores are required from all applicants.

I hope that you will apply to our program, and I look forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to call me at (865) 974-6481 to discuss program requirement, financial aid, admission procedures, or anything else about our program.

Sincerely,

William R. Nugent
