Continuing Education Webinar-Kara Gibbs, LCSW: Jan 26, 2023

Let’s Talk about Sex: Sex Positive Clinical Social Work

Continuing Ed updates

We live a time of demand for greater inclusivity and affirmation of all varieties of experiences, and as such, social work practitioners need to shift and change how we think about, approach, and work with clients of various sexual backgrounds and experiences. This program will focus mainly on introduction to sex positivity in clinical social work as well as queer affirming practices including affirming language, being aware of our own biases and privilege, and resources for learning more about sex positive social work.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Be able to define “sex positive” within social work and society at large
  • Increase their familiarity with sex positive and queer affirming language and the varieties of sexual experience and expressions that a client may present with in a clinical setting
  • Expand their knowledge of the intersections of sexuality and social work to understand why sexuality must be addressed in order to treat, or work with, the whole individual and uphold ethical guidelines set forth by the NASW Code of Ethics
  • Increase their awareness of clinician implicit bias and discomfort around discussing sexual topics in clinical social work

About the presenter
Kara Gibbs is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 13 years of clinical experience including as a primary therapist with adolescents and adult women in residential substance use treatment, psychotherapy in a school setting, program development, clinical supervisor, and as a private practitioner. Kara is a holistic practitioner, focusing on addressing and affirming the whole person, not just the initial problem that brings an individual into therapy. Kara believes that sex and sexuality play a significant role in identity, self-esteem, and how individuals relate to themselves, others, and the world at large. As such, there is a need for increased awareness of how to appropriately engage with clients in exploration of their sexual self as a component of treatment.
