Course Description

The responsibility of raising children can feel overwhelming for parents and can present a challenge for mental health professionals trying to provide effective techniques to support parents in the therapeutic setting. This workshop will focus on increasing the knowledge of emotional regulated parenting styles and adapting their styles to address the varied needs of a dysregulated child. Attendees of this workshop will experience a variety of techniques that can be used to assist parents/families in moving through the challenges of parenting while remaining emotionally connected to their child.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least two different parenting styles;
  2. Identify how trauma/intergenerational trauma impacts parenting techniques; and
  3. Identify at least two techniques which can be used to improve emotional regulation within parents to address challenging behaviors.

CEUs

Participants are eligible to earn 1.5 continuing education units.

Target Audience

Social Workers, Professional Counselors, Psychologists, Grief Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists.

About the Presenter

Rachel Ross is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker/Registered Play Therapist Supervisor and holds a master’s degree in Social Work degree from University of Tennessee. Before joining the University of Tennessee in August of 2022, Rachel dedicated 21 years to addressing the mental health needs of children/parents/families. She specializes in Play Therapy for children/families who have experienced traumatic life events. Since 2016, Rachel has been a certified train-the-trainer for Tennessee’s Building Strong Brains which focus is to ensure every child born in Tennessee has the opportunity to lead a healthy, productive life. In September of 2022, Rachel became the Branch President of the Tennessee Association for Play Therapy which seek to advance the discipline of play therapy for children/families across the state of Tennessee.
