Developing Specialized Skills

The Social Work profession has historically encouraged international relationships and student exchange during the academic experience. In order to meet the demand of the social work profession, increased number of immigrants and refugees to the United States, and the global issues, professionals must be not only aware of disparity and difference in culture but skilled in adapting to and responding to various needs. Study abroad/student exchange is a unique opportunity to challenge students both academically and interpersonally. The coordination of specific courses and global experiences in a professional degree program allows for the development of specialized skills in assessing needs, implementing strategies, and evaluating efficiency and effectiveness in global initiatives.

Collaborating with International Colleagues

It is important for social workers to look beyond borders to assist in creating a better quality of life for people through collaboration with professional colleagues around the world. It is important to acknowledge that the direction of cross-national social work knowledge transmission is hardly limited outward from the U.S., but that there are always lessons to be learned from other countries. Global programs provide opportunities for social work students and educators to exchange ideas, research findings, and experiences with regard to practice opportunities outside realm of one’s own country.
