The Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville benefits the residents of the state of Tennessee, the nation, and the world. The program’s mission is to educate students for culturally relevant and ethically sound social work practice within a changing global context affecting social work practice. Sensitivity to the personal, social, economic and political needs of vulnerable, high-risk populations is emphasized within a person and environment context. In accordance with professional social work’s ethical code and values, importance is placed on client empowerment, individual and political advocacy for greater social and economic justice, and challenging the oppression of diverse and vulnerable populations.

MSSW students may choose to take classes in a tradition classroom environment or online. The College offers the MSSW program through “face to face” classes on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus as well as at the College’s Nashville campus. The Online MSSW was created to allow students to pursue a MSSW degree regardless of their physical proximity to one of the two campuses. (The Online MSSW is one of the nation’s top accredited online programs when it comes to value and affordability, according to newly released rankings from the GetEducated consumer organization. It’s important to note that whether you take classes on campus or online, the MSSW program is taught by the same professors, is held to the same high standards, and is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Regardles of how you attend classes, you may choose from three programs of study:
- The Full-time program enables students to complete their studies in two years.
- The part time Extended Study program allows students to complete the MSSW degree in three or four years. (Please note that extended study classes are taught during the day as well as online.)
- The Advanced Standing program is designed for students who have a BSW or BSSW degree from a school of social work accredited by the CSWE, and can be completed in one year as a full time student or two years as a part time student.
