Student Profile- Portia Granger, DSW

Portia Granger is a third year DSW student in the 2022 cohort.

What has been your favorite part(s) of your experience so far?
My favorite parts of the experience so far have been that most of the major projects, papers and assignments we have done either have been or will be applied to what we do on a regular basis.

What drew you to pursue a degree in social work?
In all transparency, the awesome professional who provided the supervision for my LCSW also became my consultant when I started my private practice. I expressed to her that I wanted to be more marketable and in a better position to create real and effective change through my discipline in my community and expressed my interest of applying to DSW program at other institutions. She spoke highly of UTK’s DSW program, so I researched it and was immediately attracted to the emphasis on advanced clinical practice and leadership within curriculum.

What are you interested in doing once you graduate?
I am blessed beyond measure to say that that I want to do when I graduate, I’ve been given the opportunity to do within the last three months. My research for my capstone involves an intervention with collegiate athletes. Just the proposal catapulted me to be in a position to be the first sports counseling personnel with Southern Miss Athletics. My official title is Associate Director of Sports Counseling and Performance. My next step is “to the League…”

Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’m honored and most grateful for the wonderful friends I have made with cohort members with all intention to do life and stay in contact well past graduation.
